Learning outside the classroom – make a simple donation, with big impact.

We were so pleased to get this donation of gardening equipment to the students at Lokusero primary school in Kenya. Huge thanks to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy's  education team for making the delivery. The learners have been trying to cultivate a garden but in recent dry years they’ve been up against elephants that learned how to access their rainwater collection tanks.  After suffering considerable destruction ( broken gutters, damaged tanks, trampled ground) the school recently received fencing to keep the [...]

KIRUSSO, enabling youngsters in Tanzania.

It’s always a joy to receive news of excited young conservationists, learning and doing new things. Today’s inspiring news came from Paul KIMWAGA, who coordinates a commuity based organisation called KIRUSSO, in the Kigoma Region of western Tanzania. PACE has provided educational materials to KIRUSSO,  for their work with school teachers and Eco-clubs.   “Today I am happy to come back to you again to give you a brief report on the progress of the distribution, reading and use of the [...]

Vertical Conservation Agriculture at Ntalabany Primary School in Kenya.

Ntalabany primary school is located in the Leparua Community Conservancy in northern Kenya. It works with the Lewa Schools programme. The Conservation and Agriculture Club at Ntalabany wanted to practice Conservation Agriculture (see PACE Action Sheet 30), but met a number of constraints -  the school compound is covered with sandy soil and rocks and there is a limited source of water. They had limited resources, and also  most of the land around the school is open to grazing animals as [...]

Stay alert to Corona Virus

PACE Educators - Corona virus remains a danger.  PLEASE continue to protect yourselves and encourage those around you to wash hands, use social distancing and wear facemasks. If you know anyone without access to facemasks why not demonstrate how they they can make their own.  This easy to make design from Coaching Conservation in Botswana is a simple, practical, no-cost option. If you are back at school or around children in the community making facemasks is an activity that supports craft, design [...]

Staying informed, protecting & caring for ourselves, each other and the environment

Over recent weeks much of the discussion amongst PACE educators, and there’s been a lot,  has focused on their concern to be informed about Corona virus and COVID-19. As community leaders and educators they are anxious to understand, to have correct facts, to know how to prepare, how to protect, how to respond when people are unwell and how best to advise those around them. They are aware that many people have limited access to information, and don’t [...]

A fun, creative, no-cost, environmentally friendly activity for kids with time on their hands – Paper mache

Paper mache has always been a favourite PACE project - popular with education authorities, schools, teachers, students, and just about everyone else as well.  Paper mache costs nothing, makes use of everyday materials that would otherwise be waste, is creative (the list of things you can make is almost endless), helps keep our environment clean, reduces our environmental footprint, and can even raise a little income if we make attractive items people will buy! Some of the items you could make [...]

Carbon Green Africa engaging communities with conservation in Zimbabwe

Late in November Charles Khumalo organised a PACE Quiz competition for children from schools in the Mola area, Kariba, in northern Zimbabwe. Charles is a head game scout, a local man, and passionate about helping his communities to develop, while living peacefully alongside the wildlife around them. He was introduced to PACE in 2017 and quickly appreciated the potential of it's problem-solving approach. He has started running interschool quizzes to encourage children and their teachers to learn about and find solutions [...]

Preparing for National Tree Planting Day

Rhino School activities for November & December. For the whole third term, we are continuing with topics related to trees. This is a build up to the National Tree planting Day which is held every first Saturday of December. I plan to buy tree seedlings to give to the participating schools. One of the schools already has an orchard and have said that a donation of fruit tree seedlings will be most welcome. Excursions into the Conservancy for local kids, parents [...]

PACE – sharing ideas between communities in Africa.

A group of 21 teachers and students from Riverside Secondary School in Seychelles arrived in Uganda 17th August, for an exchange visit with Mutolere Secondary school, Kisoro Region in the east of the country. They shared ideas, on environmental issues and how they use PACE in the Seychelles and in Uganda. Guided by experienced and knowledgable local rangers they  visited Mgahinga National Park, home to Mountain Gorillas and other wildlife. They looked at caves, climbed mountains, explored local farms and met [...]
