Biochar Action sheet

Our new PACE Action sheet explains how, at community or household level, people can take advantage of the benefits Biochar can bring to their daily lives.   Simple, low or no cost artisanal methods to improve lives, livelihoods, and the environment – locally and globally. It was written with Graeme Boyd-Moss, inspired by experience on his parents small holding in north western Kenya. Biochar has been integral to life at Spencer’s Farm for nearly 20 years. It has ensured that they have [...]

‘PERMACULTURE’ providing for our families, protecting nature.

Our lockdown VOCAB for this week is 'PERMACULTURE' Now that schools and jobsites are closed and sources of income drying up, people across Africa are looking for ways to feed their families, some in desperation.  Those of you turning to your farms, vegetable gardens and orchards, any space and way to produce food, this post is especially for you. Permaculture is a way to grow more food for less – less cost, less space and less work. Permaculture works in the [...]

PACE Lockdown ‘VOCAB’

The 'Vocab' word for this week is " Z O O  N O S E S " The gentle animal in the picture is not a zoonose.  But today is the 50th international Earth day, a day to think about the wildlife, ecosystems and all living inhabitants of our planet - their combined health, security and long term well being. We are also in the middle of a global pandemic. The two make this word especially topical, and the picture very [...]

Ways to encourage rigorous Handwashing practices

PACE educators - Now is the time to make sure everyone around you knows and uses good hand washing practices. If you have PACE materials look at Action sheet # 27 Wash your Hands, #28 Making Soap, and help each person in your household to read (or read to them) the water chapter in Africa our Home for background information. It will also support school learning that many are missing out on just now. With many children not in school why [...]

Carbon Green Africa engaging communities with conservation in Zimbabwe

Late in November Charles Khumalo organised a PACE Quiz competition for children from schools in the Mola area, Kariba, in northern Zimbabwe. Charles is a head game scout, a local man, and passionate about helping his communities to develop, while living peacefully alongside the wildlife around them. He was introduced to PACE in 2017 and quickly appreciated the potential of it's problem-solving approach. He has started running interschool quizzes to encourage children and their teachers to learn about and find solutions [...]

PACE Energy & Climate Change

PACE - Energy and Climate Change. We all depend on energy, yet despite the many potential energy sources in Africa, fuel scarcity and high prices are increasing problems. The PACE energy module helps people address these issues by looking at how to better manage existing available energy sources and explaining simply, some of the alternative, sustainable sources. Energy and Climate Change are inextricably linked, and climate change is already impacting on the everyday lives of human (and wildlife) communities across Africa. [...]

Someone somewhere has found a solution!

PACE shares solutions to common environmental problems. Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Botswana is working with us to do just that. These grade 6 students from Morula Primary School from Selebi Phikwe in the north eastern part of Botswana visited the Mokolodi Nature Reserve Education Centre recently. The Educators took them on a field trip around the park, where they saw and learned first hand about soil erosion and the efforts that Mokolodi Nature Reserve is making to control it. Seeing how [...]

Building Conservation Education Capacity in Zimbabwe

Experts from Sebakwe Conservation and Education Centre (SCEC) and the Kariba REDD+ Project in Zimbabwe came together for a PACE training at SCEC the 19th - 21st August.   It was designed and facilitated by SCEC Manager and PACE Champion, Palloma Pachiti.  Palloma has been supporting Kariba REDD+ in their Conservation Education for more than a year and both sides were keen to train up a resource person on the Kariba staff. Charles Khumalo, pictured right, heads a team of rangers [...]

PACE helping teachers deliver Environment & Sustainability Education across Africa

The United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals set a new direction for education, and to their great credit governments across Africa have engaged the process. Most African governments now expect their schools to address the Education for Sustainable Development frameworks. Education for sustainable development (or Environment & Sustainability Education) is about the content people learn, its relevance, how it’s linked to global challenges and how learners develop competences to address these challenges in a sustainable way. However, adapting new theories, knowledge [...]
