Getting kids onto computers!

In May last year we wrote about the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) at Lewa Wildlife conservancy in Kenya.  As a PACE hub the DLP created a PACE channel (containing all the PACE content) on the Kolibri software they use, and made this available to schools, 23 in total, that they support in the area around Lewa conservancy.  DLP  helped the schools acquire tablets and smart boards, created school intranets, digitised curriculum material and additional content like PACE and loaded it [...]

Children not only learning, but making a difference, a big difference!

This is Ntalabany primary school in northern Kenya. It was brought to our attention 18 months ago when Lewa educators created a new PACE action sheet to share the children's vertical gardening innovations and success.  We're told that this year they are having to rethink the concept of school clubs like the Environment Club at Ntalabany, because they have moved from the club being 20 or 30 kids interested in environment to the whole school being involved. Rather than [...]

Newly qualified Vulture experts at Makuleke!

In April we produced a series of four 'webinars' with VulPro.  The webinar recordings were used as the first introductory sessions for a club, the VulPro Vulture Club, that has been meeting in Makuleke cultural centre, on alternate Saturdays since.   Makuleke is at the northern end of Kruger National Park in South Africa. The club members are youngsters from nearby schools, and it's been organised by the Makuleke Park manager and led by his Conservation educators, Rhulani and Mika. [...]

Ecological custodians on weekend Camp in south west Zimbabwe.

PACE is proud to be assisting the Ecological Custodians Foundation in south western Zimbabwe. Di Drummond, with help from volunteers and interns has been assisting local schools for years, including Jopempe, Mlelezi and Chiswene schools.   We 're very pleased that PACE materials they received this year have been helpful - providing content, ideas for activities and reading material as ECF started establishing and getting Eco clubs up and running in the area.   ECF ran a first weekend camp for the [...]

Wildlife Action Group Malawi is a non-profit organization that works with local communities and the Malawian Government to protect wild areas and the wildlife that live there. The reserves total over 520 km2 , and are key water catchments and rich in biodiversity.  The WAG education team visit primary and secondary schools around the reserves on a regular monthly basis: they are improving school [...]

A PACE visit to Lewa education centre in Kenya.

Educators from Lamu on Kenya's coast discussing their visit with Ephantus Mugo, Conservation Education Coordinator at Lewa.   The Education department at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya continued as a PACE hub this year, and as such, hosted our partners from Kenya’s coast recently. Led by the LamCot programme manager, educators from nine primary and secondary schools traveled up country to get a taste of the innovative ways that schools around Lewa are using Conservation education to [...]

School kids debating – for conservation or not for conservation?

Living with Wildlife, the advantages and disadvantages   The RISE department at Southern Africa Wildlife College has been organising school debating competitions.  These youngsters (above) attend schools in the Manyeleti Circuit, Mpumalanga Province in South Africa, close to Kruger National Park and the College. They are from communities that were displaced by the park.  The students from five primary and four high schools each set up teams, prepared their case and traveled to the College for their competition.  On day one, [...]

Conservation education, Makuleke, South Africa

Last month, along with the RISE unit at Southern Africa Wildlife College and VulPro, we organised a series of four webinars to raise Vulture awareness in and around Kruger National Park in South Africa. Vulture numbers in Kruger are low, and poisoning events like one last year that killed 120 birds are having catastrophic impact.  The Makuleke Park Manager, Aubrey Maluleke, works alongside SANParks running a community owned, community run area within Kruger National Park. He included his educators in the [...]

KIRUSSO, enabling youngsters in Tanzania.

It’s always a joy to receive news of excited young conservationists, learning and doing new things. Today’s inspiring news came from Paul KIMWAGA, who coordinates a commuity based organisation called KIRUSSO, in the Kigoma Region of western Tanzania. PACE has provided educational materials to KIRUSSO,  for their work with school teachers and Eco-clubs.   “Today I am happy to come back to you again to give you a brief report on the progress of the distribution, reading and use of the [...]
